Next Sunday evening, October 16th, boulevard St-Laurent’s eco-friendly, mostly volunteer-run, local culture and food-promoting, fine dining-ish restaurant, Robin des Bois, is hosting the 4th annual 100-Mile Meal and Community Conversation. The event, put on by Santropol Roulant, features a four course meal of all Quebec-grown (maybe Vermont-grown, but only if it’s closer than Quebec’s own Gaspésie) food and wine. Tim Murphy from Santropol Roulant walks me through the concept and some potential items on the menu in this interview.
While I’m thinking squash-based soup to start and maybe a sweet potato pie to finish, he fills in the middle grey area with beef from a local farm and explains why there’s no fish on this year’s menu. There are a few tickets left for this free (suggested donation $15-$30) dinner, but you’ve got to be the type to want to make friends with your dining companions, aka strangers who will become friends by the end of the night…you hope…since the second half of the event is a discussion “exploring the intersections between food, race, class, culture and identity.” Three local experts on the subject will present their viewpoints and then combine with the audience in an open discussion. Sure, you can keep your mouth shut, but you might be done chewing by then, and will have to come up with a better excuse to not be part of the community. If you don’t have something of value to say…eat! But if you can’t eat…?
