I’m back in Barbados for another series of interviews (and now videos) for Menu International, a magazine available in most of the high-end hotels and restaurants on the tropical Caribbean island. In the past, I’ve written stories about award-winning chefs, Italian aperitivo happy hours, and food and cocktail recipes (including a story about how one of the island’s most famous bartenders went from rolling a cart among the beach chairs to having his name above the bar).
I’ve also written about sea turtles and surfing (and the mangoes washed in salty ocean water that we ate right after), ylang-ylang flowers and road erosion, and my favourite highway in a country of roundabouts, bearded fig trees and left-side driving.
My favourite interviews are the ones where I learn something interesting, like the complete Barbados history lesson I got from Mannie Wade of the Animal Flower Cave and Restaurant (whom I saw on my flight down this time), about the connection between his coral cliff location and his family’s former home in Nova Scotia.
You can follow the magazine on social media and hopefully come check it out in Barbados yourself sometime. Leave me a comment and I’ll send you to some great restaurants!
Here are some of my own photos (the ones in the magazine from Kenneth Theyson are much better):
