So I’m no Oprah or Julie Andrews, but I’m allowed to have favourite things too. And so are you, and I hope these become some of them, either for giving or receiving.
1. Wine and Booze – From Pinots to Sake, rum and Quebec dessert wines. Lots of people don’t drink, including me for long periods at a time, but if they do, here are some gorgeous bottles any novitiate or connoisseur would appreciate.
2. Ultimate Granola (Gluten-free if you use gluten-free oats. Dairy-free if you use earth balance or a vegan margarine) – You’ll have to make this one yourself rather than just swipe your credit card or enter the number online, but if you make it better than me you’ll make a lifelong friend/lover (your choice, clearly) of the receiver. If they don’t love it but are capable of eating it, I don’t know what’s wrong with them.
3. Dates. Why have just one big date with someone for Christmas when you can have many? This is a touchy subject with some, but as long as you’re not sleeping with more than one at the same time and you’re open about how many dates you’ve eaten, I think you’re morally a-okay.
4. Jam. Hopefully you made this in advance or can buy it from someone you trust (email the ordering form to me at amie@midnightpoutine.ca). Strawberry-vanilla, cherry-cinnamon, or peach…Pickles require you to know the recipient a little better, since most people like jam, but not all know what to do with pickled dilly green beans.
5. A Fancy Meal. For hip, contemporary food in a romantic, small restaurant, try Cafe Sardine. For a worthy dinner splurge in a chic, upscale locale, try Toqué, and for the true gourmand who values flavour and unique food experiences only as much as he or she does a dollar, there’s Thanjai South Indian. In Toronto try the Hoof Raw Bar for wine and sustainable seafood, Enoteca Sociale for pasta, and Khao San Road for Thai, and in Newfoundland there’s fine dining Raymond’s and heart-stopping destination, Atlantica in Portugal Cove. Stay overnight if you can afford it and don’t miss a single wave crashing through the floor-to-ceiling windows while enjoying your multi-course tasting menu from a stellar chef. Enter the name of any of these restaurants in my search bar on the right for more info or a full review.
Note: the photo at the top is not of my favourite things. Rather, it is of other also delicious things that would be a joy to receive.
