I’ve never used grocery delivery services before Good Food. I’m also generally upset by all the packaging in meal kits, but here I am promoting the Good Food grocery delivery service, with decent prices, regular sales, and fast delivery. But I had a discount in the mail that made ordering my first two orders cheaper than buying groceries at the store. Now I’ve used it three times when I’ve been stuck at home and unable to leave during a busy day even to get to the grocery store.
I’m not ordering a ton of ingredients for dinner. There aren’t that many sales to make it worth it. But the blueberries were sweeter and juicier than the grocery ones, and a better price. And Good Food’d own kitchen brand sorbets are cheaper than my favourite local, organic version, and low in preservatives, even though they do have a bit more sugar than I’m used to. I think I’d use this service just for the frozen fruit, though, just for the quality.
The service is $3/delivery or $6/month for unlimited delivery, but take advantage of those first-time offers and then order carefully and you’ll definitely feel as though you’re winning overall. Especially in these times of inflation, we all need a win.
Hello Fresh Meal Kits Review Update
Looks pretty, right? Crispy roasted potato wedges topped with blackened salmon and a balsamic drizzle. It even looks chaffy with that herbaceous garnish, no? Unfortunately this tasted like absolutely nothing. This is not Good Food. This is Hello Fresh. I decided to give the meal delivery service another try after finding the recipes excellent when it first launched.
I tried three meals and none was great. Whereas I’d kept the recipes from before, I tossed these. To be fair, it probably wasn’t the recipe’s fault. It was the quality of the ingredients that was at issue. The out-of-season tomatoes were underripe and bland. The red onion was moldy. The herbs were wilted. And the salmon, which I usually avoid because it’s usually unsustainable (I’m not sure about this one, but I’d be surprised if it were certified), was a little oily but also bland, even with a generous sprinkle of salt and all that sugary balsamic glaze, which tasted more American corn syrup than aged Italian condiment.
I would have retried the Good Food meal kits while I was ordering grocery, but there weren’t enough meals that were both dairy-free and gluten-free to make it worth the price.
At least I can feel better about not wasting the packaging. And I won’t be ordering the grocery delivery all the time, but it’s nice to have an option.
Thank goodness for my garden, my CSA box, and real flavour.
