Chicken wings? Nope. Chkn wings? Yes. That’s what the new all-vegan pub on St-Laurent Blvd says. Curry vegan mayo and vegan ranch with the same crudités of your average non-vegan pub also help. You probably wouldn’t even know this place was vegan unless you’d done your homework. And that’s how the owners of the new business want it.
All the alcohols, from vodka to Tequila to wines and beers, are also 100% vegan at Le Bowhead. There’s no egg whites or fish used to filter anything, which is common with wines. And while a lot of liquors are usually naturally vegan, Le Bowhead’s owners check everything so you don’t have to. This Sidecar and Margarita above are classics, no vegan adaptations necessary – just peace of mind.
Why come here if you’re not vegan? The ambiance, for one. There’s a long wraparound bar, back booths and some window seating in a private little nook off to the right, for lots of seating options. The space is the former Big in Japan restaurant. There’s plenty of beer on tap, cocktails and pub food, from hamburgers to nachos this crazy frito nacho creation where they open a bag of fritos and scoop guacamole, chili (with crumbled Beyond Meat burger) and jalapeños on top.
And there’s the Beyond Meat burger gussied up with homemade sauces (lettuce wrap for gluten free people like me), fully dressed vegan hotdogs, waffle fries and popcorn chkn with cripsy shiitake mushrooms.
Plus an iceberg wedge salad and a zucchini salad. Did I mention the eight sauce choices for your fries, pretzels of wings?
The only downside of Le Bowhead for me is there weren’t a ton of gluten free options because of all the seitan (faux chicken and burger patties other than the Beyond Meat burger). But I can’t eat much at regular pubs anyway. And at least here I can have that frito pie creations for a huge indulgence.
The part is, I know where to go with my vegan friends now! Or order online for a frito party party chez moi (ou toi).
