Vegan chef Stephanie Audet wants you to skip the gym this Wednesday morning. (Gym? Morning? Huh? you say). Or skip that extra hour of sleep, because she and Justin Finity, co-organizers of Morning Gloryville Montreal think that either way you’re better off starting your day with an early morning, booze-free dance party.
Skeptical? I was too…last time. Won’t it be awkward? Won’t I be exhausted? I thought. Sure, I was a little sleepy the rest of the day, but it was totally worth it. The other 419 people in attendance seemed to agree.
Here’s what I did: I dragged myself and a change of shoes to the loft location around 7am. I walked past the people sitting on sofas and listening to the smooth sounds of a very chill DJ, past the booths of free coffee and gluten-free treats and smoothies for purchase and through a winding hallway. At the end of the hallway, I came to the back dance room, where I grabbed a kombucha mint cocktail and circled the dance floor on my way to the yoga class. I got my yoga on for ten minutes then headed up to the massage area.
But all the massages were booked until 9:15am! I was too late to sign up for a 10 minute slot (but! This time there are more therapists, says Finity). Then I headed back downstairs, met some friendly strangers to do some acro-yoga, flew, based (see videos) and then danced as though no one could see me…until I saw friends who saw me…then I danced with them…as though no one could see me. Turns out sleep deprivation is as good as alcohol for that it-doesn’t-matter-what-you’re-doing-because-no-one-will-remember-anyway feelin. Aka sober social lubricant. Maybe we should all just go to more parties tired and sober and we’d have a great time.
Morning Gloryville London (it happens all over the world)
Here’s what’s going to be different from last time according to Finity:
“The new venue is beautiful, with enormous ceilings and way bigger at 7,000 square feet. The old architecture is a relic of the old live of the space when it was the Canadian Bank of Commerce. Instead of conservative bankers, it’s now home to hundreds of happy shiny dancers! It’s only a six minute (beautiful and scenic) walk through old port, leaving Place d’Armes, passing Notre Dame cathedral.” Plus it can fit an extra couple hundred people.
“The yoga and massage areas will have a little more space from the dancing, but it’s in the same room. The music will be tuned better, so everyone can hear our wonderful yogis!”
My favourite part: there’ll be more massage therapists (and more—though shorter—sessions).
“We think we’re going to pass our last attendance record!” says Finity. “We’ve already sold half our tickets. Most cities sell 50% of their tickets 1-2 nights before the event. We have more capacity at this venue, but we don’t want anyone disappointed at the door.”
