It’s an oyster celebration in Montreal!
From the 17th to 27th of October you can get a dozen oysters and a cocktail, glass of wine or a beer for $10 at participating restaurants. The goal is to help you discover four featured types of oysters (three from New Brunswick and one from PEI) and taste the differences.
At the launch event, I tasted all four – the Honey Moon, the Summer Love, the Royal Canadian and the Village Bay – and I honestly couldn’t taste much of a difference. The Royal Canadian (PEI) were the biggest and plumpest because of spending 6-7 years in the water, but other than that…they were all just tasty.
And at $10 for 12, it’s a steal. The restaurants are getting the oysters at cost and passing that price on to customers. So you’re essentially getting a free drink AND discount (but fresh) oysters. So the restaurants aren’t making money on this, but the idea is that you’ll at least have discovered a new place to which you want to return another time, like the swanky L’Auberge Saint-Gabriel where the launch party took place. When else are you going to get to eat and drink there for $10?
You can also get the $10 for a dozen oysters offer if you go directly to Odessa Poissonnier on rue Molson in Montreal. Or you can get 100 oysters for $80, which simple math tells you comes to 80 cents an oyster instead of 83 cents an oyster. But you don’t get a drink with it. And you have to pay tax and tip at the restaurants. So it all comes out in the wash. Either way, it’s a good deal.
The participating restaurants and fishmonger are:
L’Auberge Saint-Gabriel
Greasy Spoon
Sumi Dojo
Maison St-Paul
Bar Le Lab
Robbie’s Smokehouse

Sea Salt & Ceviche
