Kaza Maza, a Syrian restaurant located on avenue du Parc between Mont-Royal and Saint-Joseph, celebrated its two year anniversary last week. In a city of continuous consctruction, one of the major areas of difficulty in the past two years has been this exact strip of avenue du Parc, making it perhaps not the best place to open a restauant, but Kaza Maza has ridden through the road upheaval and other restaurant closures relatively unscathed. So when I went to the restaurant to speak with co-owner Fadi Sakrand about the secret to his restaurant’s success amid so much literal upheaval, he proudly walked me through the appeal of a cuisine of olive oil, rich spices, fresh herbs, lamb shanks and pomegranate seeds coupled with art and music, and explains that the neighbourhood itself has played a huge role in the restaurant‘s success.

For more information on Kaza Maza restaurant go to www.kazamaza.ca. The restaurant is open for dinner Tuesday to Sunday and for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am. The restaurant also sells the fair trade za’ataar spice blend of salt, sumac, thyme, and sesame from Palestine that I’ve spoken about on the Friday Morning After Show on CKUT 90.3FM a few months ago as part of the Medical Aid for Palestine initiative (pictured below).
