Back in April, there was a wave of gourmet food boxes for home delivery from farms, fromageries and restaurants. Now, with the Red Zone second wave situation in Montreal, there’s a cool and affordable new initiative offering food from a variety of reputable Montreal chefs put together by two highly respected Montreal restaurateurs. What sets this one apart, I feel (and the reason I chose to write about it), is the easy-to-navigate website and the affordable prices. And the box comes at the perfect time to order a bunch of side dishes (or a whole meal) for Thanksgiving, whether you’re dining solo this socially distanced year or need to feed the whole family. |
How does it work?
Deliveries come on Thursday, Friday or Saturday and you order before Monday by 5 p.m. to receive it on Thursday; Tuesday by 5 p.m. for Friday; and Wednesday by 5 p.m. to receive your box on Saturday.
You can also custom fill your box with selections from the pantry section of the website, like sauces from Smoke Show, spices from La Pincée, maple products from Nos Cabanes and honey from Miels d’Anicet.
If you can’t decide what you want, there are also Discovery Boxes.
Which Montreal Restaurants have dishes on the site for sale?
Les Street Monkeys: Cambodian and Southeast Asian street food
Bistro Tendresse: Upscale vegan cuisine
Grumman’78: The home of tacos
Moleskine: Pasta heaven, I hear
Mauvais Garçons: Casual local fare
Sumac: Lebanese shawarma, sandwiches and salads (I love the sabich eggplant with egg and fermented mango amba)
Restaurant Wellington: French bistro
According to the press release, you can get Moleskine’s pappardelle bolognese sauce, marinated meat by the Street Monkeys chefs, savoury vegan dumplings and dark chocolate and nuts cookie dough from Bistro Tendresse,
Who’s Behind the Boxes?
Anne-Marie Giguère (BARROCO) and Kassandra Brochu (Atwater cocktail club, Blossom, and a former editor at Resto Montreal) are the brainchildren behind the website and online ordering platform. They’re not chefs, which is good, because a project like this needs coordinators to make the whole thing work with so many other chefs involved. And since there are so many restaurants involved, it makes sense they’re only delivering boxes three days a week.
What Makes Les Weekendeurs Better Than Foodora, UberEats and SkiptheDishes?
They take a 15% cut instead of the third party apps, which often taken around 30% of a restaurants revenue. |
You Said Something About Thanksgiving?
I did. There’s vegan marinated mushrooms from Tendresse for $9, smoked duck breast from Wellington for $11, miso butter brussels sprouts for $10, fingerling potatoes and confit garlic for $8 and a whole plate of lasagna or tiramisu from Moleskine for $25. That sounds like Thanksgiving for me plus a turkey (yes, I’d have lasagna with Thanksgiving; “If Italians would do it, so would I” is my rule).
