Yesterday morning I had a long overdue media reunion Joanne Vrakas on CJAD Radio in Montreal to chat about saving money on groceries in this time of inflation. I’d been a quasi-regular on the now defunct Breakfast Television Montreal for a couple years where Joanne was a co-host before she moved on to CJAD. I later moved on to CJAD myself (as a news writer/reader and very poor tech – I don’t think I’d ever get comfortable running the board alone).
We had a lovely chat (at least, I had a lovely chat) about ways to save money by stocking up on pantry staples like beans, lentils and canned tomatoes, being selective about frozen vegetables over canned, and where to buy quality items in bulk.
We ran out of time before getting to talk about soup bones for homemade stock, Turkish red pepper pastes for braises, and my undying love for the Indian recipes of Madhur Jaffrey, but here’s the interview in case you want to learn a bit more about samples and deals at Jean-Talon Market, spring pea risotto and what the heck “skimming the scum” means when you’re making lentils.
